I saw the Wild Tchoupitoulas during the 1980 Jazz and Blues Festival at the DewDrop Inn (so called, for the duration of the Festival). There was a Mardi Gras photography exhibition in the lobby of the venue, and I followed some of the Tchoupitoulas round the room admiring themselves ("hey, there's Jolly!"). The gig that followed was the best I've seen before or since. They played material from the album you reviewed.

I've never seen "funky" so wonderfully embodied - the band would start off on a simple, infectious riff and the Tchoupitoulas would add percussion and chant - its impossible to describe the infectious, warm party atmosphere it produced - you had to be there. It has stayed with me for the rest of my life as a defining experience of what it is to be alive.

I also saw Chief Jolly at a Professor Longhair tribute that year. He played piano in an unusual low-down gutbucket style - not really the standard blues, more like something from another planet. He will always be a musical idol.
